Blessed be the sci-fi fruit. Check out two new shows that are truly out-of-this-world, and two rooted right here on terra firma.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Man, this new Star Trek is so much fun. I have to say, I enjoyed last week’s episode more than Obi-Wan Kenobi. Strange New Worlds harkens back to the old school, episodic formula of Next Generation, Voyager, and Deep Space Nine making it easy it just HOP RIGHT IN to the Captain’s chair, even if you’ve never watched an episode before. The visual quality of the show is lively and captivating, with the right amount of gloss and glam paired with original 1960’s designs of the Enterprise. Plus, there’s a wonderful ensemble cast – led by Anson Mount’s Captain Pike – that also features younger versions of the original Star Trek’s Uhura (here, an Ensign) and Spock. Although, my current favourite is the grumpy Chief Engineer Hemmer. As Captain Pike says, “Hit it!”
One Dream, One Team
Finally, there’s a good docuseries that follows a women’s professional team. If you watch the FA Women’s Super League in England, you know that Chelsea FC is the dominant force. This docuseries chronicles their rise to the top, aided by the acquisition of Australian sharpshooter – and arguably the best striker in the women’s game – Sam Kerr. The show provides a great insight into the life of a female professional footballer and the dedication required to pursue your dreams. You can watch episode 1 below and catch the rest on DAZN!
Bo Burnham: The Inside Outtakes
One year after releasing his Netflix special, Inside, Bo Burnham has released the outtakes…the Inside Outtakes. Perhaps even more chaotic than his Netflix special, they feature more footage of Bo trying to conjure brilliance from his increasingly melancholic mindspace, as well as few more finished products that didn’t make the cut. Check out the whole thing here.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
What a glorious time to be a sci-fi fan. Last Thursday, I watched new Star Wars followed by new Star Trek and spent 3 hours in a glorious headspace full of the Force AND warp drive. Obi-Wan Kenobi gets off to an intriguing start, set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, but I’m still a little curious as to how Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader is going to get woven into the story. But, hey, it can’t be much worse than his last appearance? (See “Padme NOOOO!” video) I’ll be along for the ride, regardless. Bring on the CGI and adorable creatures!
