New TV: Tegan & Sara’s Origin Story & The Start of Spotify

high school tv

With this season of House of the Dragon and Rings of Power having come to a close, you might be looking for a few more things to watch. Here are two, true story TV adaptations that I’ve enjoyed lately.

The Playlist

If you want a slightly less chaotic version of The Social Network with all the smarts and zero of the Justin Timberlake, I strongly recommend The Playlist on Netflix. The show chronicles the creation of Spotify with each episode following the story from a different perspective – from the Founder to the Coder to the Investor. The show is mostly in Swedish, which I personally find to be a boon (although, if you are wondering, there are no Skarsgårds present.) Definitely recommend for an engaging storyline that quickly hooks you in!

High School

I was really keen to see how they pulled off the TV adaptation of Tegan and Sara’s memoir High School, which highlights the ups-of-downs of their teenage years in Calgary, including discovering rave culture, their queerness, and ultimately, their talent. Filmed on location in Calgary, including in their ACTUAL high school, this is one of the few instances where the city is actually playing itself. The show is a slow burn, and I felt that I benefited from having read the book and knowing where things were heading. But, give it a go if Tegan and Sara, Calgary, and/or a coming-of-age storyline sounds interesting to you. All episodes are now streaming on Amazon Prime!

Also, to put in on your radar, The White Lotus Season 2 starts tonight and features a mostly brand new cast – including Aubrey Plaza! This time it’s set in Sicily. Buckle up!
