Two New Movies I Can’t Stop Thinking About

In between my weekly watchings of Hawkeye, Yellowjackets, Dickinson, and The Expanse, I’ve watched two tremendous movies that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Find them below!

The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog trailer set me up for the expectations of a dreary tale featuring one Doctor Stephen Strange (aka Benedict Cumberbatch.) What I got was so very, very different. Filmed on the South Island of New Zealand, the tale takes place on a ranch in 1920s Montana and follows two brothers, one of whom, begins to psychologically torment the other’s new wife and stepson. Written and directed by Kiwi legend Jane Campion (The Piano) the film is beautifully shot and directed, with an impressive score to boot. And, the story itself is entrancing, with an ending that caused me to clap and exclaim “Wow – THAT was a great movie!” It’s a bit of a slow-burn, but I hope you watch it and enjoy it as much as I did.

(I’ll put the trailer below, but it was far less haunting and far more enjoyable than the trailer perhaps indicates.)

The Rescue

Directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi (Free Solo), this movie tells the story of the 2018 Thai cave rescue where 13 members of a boys soccer team were rescued from deep within a flooded cave system. The movie skillfully weaves together recreated and real footage, and reveals many facts and dangers that were not publicized during the event. After watching, you’ll have an even bigger appreciation for just how hard this rescue was to accomplish, and how it was amazing that (spoiler alert) everyone survived. Watch now on Disney+!
