From fantasy shows to musical entertainment, here are a handful of TV and movies I’ve enjoyed lately that you might consider adding to your watch list!
Sweet Tooth
Appropriately, Sweet Tooth is a very sweet tale. One of only a few productions let into New Zealand last year during COVID, the story is based on a DC Comic about a human-deer boy hybrid called Gus. He is one of many human-animal hybrids that have evolved following “The Sick” – a plague that has plunged humanity into a dystopian future. The first episode was a bit of a slog to get through, but it quickly picks up the pace following some necessary stage-setting, and I am nearly done all 8 episodes. A perfect binge-watch now on Netflix!
Bo Burnham: Inside
Lyrical and melodic mastermind Bo Burnham returns with his latest TV special. Although, this time, things are not all glossy and glam. Instead, he has adapted his performance to fit inside a studio apartment, which he films himself over the course of a year. You see Bo begin to unravel after hours of solitude spent crafting performances and filming them himself. The show is still filled with hilarity, but also a darker tone that creeps in halfway through the show. It’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster with highs-and-lows that will ultimately leave you exhilarated by the end. Watch now on Netflix!
Black Holes: The Edge of All We Know
As a caution, there are parts that drag in this documentary. After all, getting the first image of a black hole, and seeking to create equations that attempt to explain them, is incredibly brainy work (and it’s difficult to make chalk boards exciting.) But, featured amongst its 99 minutes, are some of the greatest minds of modern day, including the late Stephen Hawking, as well as Nobel Prize winner Andrea Ghez, astrophysicist Sasha Haco, and computer-imaging wunderkind Katie Bouman. And, while our main “tour guide” in the documentary is a somewhat unlikeable fellow (at least, I found him to be), it was incredibly inspiring to see all the smart women that are taking up space in predominantly male, khaki pant-filled rooms. It’s worth watching to understand the incredible, global collaboration required to pull off the unprecedented image of the supermassive black hole in the M87 galaxy – some 55 million light years away! Watch now on Netflix.
In the Heights
Lin-Manuel Miranda has released the first 8-minutes of “In the Heights”, which debuted this week on HBO Max. I’m always a bit unsure about musicals being adapted for television/movies, but I became quickly engrossed by this preview, which features fast-paced lyrics that will pique the Hamilton fan in us all. Watch below!
High on the Hog
And, of course, I wrote a feature last week on High on the Hog, which turned into not only an exploration of cuisine, but an incredible lesson in history. I highly recommend this show, as it was the most interesting and educational thing I’ve watched in recent memory. Learn more about it on my blog “High on the Hog Serves Up a Powerful Lesson in History.” Watch now on Netflix!
