I’ve spent a sizeable portion of this “lockdown” both delving back into old TV favourites and discovering a few new shows. Here are few that I’ve enjoyed over the last little while:
Homeland
The final season of the show is as engaging as ever, and follows the brilliant, but often not-believed, CIA operative Carrie Mathison. The show is smart and fast-paced and has consistently reinvented itself through a slew of series regulars and plotlines. Now is the perfect time to start (or re-start) if you haven’t been following along!
Dickinson
I was late to discovering this show, which debuted back in November 2019, but crushed all 10 episodes in 2 days last week. Whilst by no means “high-brow”, the show boasts a killer soundtrack and does a fun job of depicting the infamous Emily Dickinson (Hailee Steinfeld) as a “modern-speaking” teenager in the 1800s. Discover the origin of one of the world’s greatest poets…while also watching Wiz Khalifa play Death and listening to Billie Eilish and Mitski. Pure fun.
Normal People
This one was a bit of a slog, but the acting, chemistry, believability, and acoustic-driven soundtrack were incredibly good. Based on the book by Sally Rooney, the story follows two Irish teenagers – Connell and Marianne – as they navigate first love and early adulthood. The show is a bit of a drawn-out character story, but you become invested in these two characters, as you follow their ups-and-downs, and (somewhat obvious) mistakes. If you’re feeling a bit down, perhaps give this a pass. Otherwise, if you’re up for a decent dose of relationship “realness”, dreary weather, and more on-screen cups of tea than a Coronation Street episode – give it a go.
The Last Dance
I grew up watching the Chicago Bulls dominate the NBA. Now, go back in time, and witness why in this behind-the-scenes documentary that follows Phil Jackson’s exemplary coaching, GM Jerry’s (sometimes) masterful maneuverings, and a windstorm of superstars including Scottie Pippin, Dennis Rodman, and – of course – the infamous Michael Jordan.
Killing Eve
Season 3 has just begun, and it’s as entertaining as ever. My favourite character of the show might not even be the ones played by Sandra Oh or Jodie Comer, but by Fiona Shaw, who could run her MI6 division on dry humour alone. The show follows MI6 as they chase the sociopathic Villanelle (Jodie Comer) across Europe to seek an end to her increasingly “stylish” murders. It’s weird. It’s different. It’s a black comedy. It’s worth a watch!
