My Summer 2020 Spotify album has been filled with ambient sounds and remix magic. Here a few of my favourites that have made it to 20+ listens!
“Somewhere” – Slow Magic feat. Woven Hiatus
Enjoy chill vibes with a building electro background that makes this song into bedroom-dance-party-able halfway through.
“Gasoline” – HAIM
This song made me believe in HAIM again, with the chorus of “Gasoline” quickly ushering its way into my eardrums. I really dig the drum pattern laid down by Danielle Haim, and I’m sure you’ll be singing along to this song in quick succession.
“Unready” – Gordi
I’ve historically been a little one-foot-in, one-foot-out on Gordi, but I’m really enjoying her new album Our Two Skins. “Unready” has the most repeatability, with cool, layered vocals that echo throughout the song. Follow this song up with “Sandwiches” (of both the song and edible variety.)
“My Rajneesh” – Sufjan Stevens
Mein Gott. I hope you have 10 mins, because this quite the anthem. The song builds from tranquil finger plucking into the massive Sufjan Stevens ensemble sound you know and love. When the choir comes in at 3:50 I feel alive.
“Kinda Lovely (Bleu Toucan Remix)” – Poolside
I’ve been digging two remixes of Poolside song in Bleu Toucan’s remixing of “Kinda Lovely” and Moullinex’s remix of “Sunrise Strategies” so far this summer. Bring these to the beach.
“Lightning” – Joey Pecoraro
Ambient vibes only. This is a great song to work or chill to. You might be waiting for the lyrics to hit (spoiler alert: they never do), but I think it works nicely on its own.
“Galaxias Cercanas” – Mala Rodriguez
Guilty pleasure. I got this off the one episode of Warrior Nun that I managed to make it through (I really, really wanted to like that show, but the dialogue…I could not.) This has accompanied me on many a run, and I hope to be able to know the lyrics (aka Spanish) by 2025.
“Every Colour” – Luca Fogale
I remember promoting this guy when he was playing at Hard Rock Casino Vancouver a few years ago, and I’m super happy his homegrown talent is finding an audience. Love the dreamy vibes and drumming pattern that pervade this song. Perfect for sunset watching.
“First Prize Bravery – Home Recording” – Sorcha Richardson
I am still riding the Sorcha Richardson train, and her isolation home recordings album offers an even more stripped back version of her songs. “Oh Oscillator” and “First Prize Bravery” have been stuck in my head for some time, and I strongly encourage listening to this emerging indie-acoustic talent.
